World Literature and Language Anxiety
In this talk I shall argue that Goethe’s concept of Weltliteratur is marked by a language anxiety that also forms the specific condition of contemporary postcolonial literatures and distinguishes them from World Literature in general. Taking issue with Pascale Casanova’s simple assimilation of “minor” with “postcolonial” literatures, and her more recent criticism of the postcolonial for being political at the expense of the aesthetic, I shall consider the postcolonial relation to language with specific examples that will include VS Naipaul and contemporary writers from the Maghreb and the Middle East.

Littérature mondiale et inquiétude de la langue
Je verrai que la notion de Weltliteratur telle qu'elle a été définie par Goethe se caractérise par une inquiétude linguistique qui est aussi la condition spécifique des littératures postcoloniales contemporaines et les distingue de la littérature mondiale en générale. Contestant l’équation de Pascale Casanova entre littératures « mineures » et littératures « postcoloniales » et sa critique plus récente du ‘postcolonial’ qui privilégierait le politique aux dépens de l’esthétique ou du poétique, j’examinerai le rapport qu'entretient le postcolonial à la langue, en m’appuyant sur des exemples précis tirés de l’œuvre de VS Naipaul et d’autres écrivains contemporains du Maghreb et du Moyen-Orient.

Robert JC Young est l'un des plus importants théoriciens des postcolonial studies. Il est actuellement Julius Silver Professor of English and Comparative Literature à New York University et éditeur du journal Interventions: International Journal of Postcolonial Studies. Il a notamment publié:The Idea of English Ethnicity (Blackwell, 2008); Postcolonialism: A Very Short Introduction (OUP, 2003); Postcolonialism: An Historical Introduction (Blackwell, 2001); Colonial Desire: Hybridity in Culture, Theory and Race (London/New York: Routledge, 1995), White Mythologies: Writing History and the West (Routledge, 1990).
